EdP vs EdT vs Parfum โ€” What's the Difference?

Parfum

Pure Perfume / Extrait
20โ€“40%

8โ€“12+ hours

The most concentrated and long-lasting. A few drops on pulse points lasts all day and into the next. The most expensive concentration per ml.

Eau de Parfum

EdP
15โ€“20%

6โ€“8 hours

The most popular concentration. Richer and more complex than EdT, excellent longevity, and appropriate for all-day and evening wear. Best value for premium fragrances.

Eau de Toilette

EdT
5โ€“15%

4โ€“6 hours

Lighter and more casual. Ideal for daytime, office, and warm weather. More affordable per bottle. Reapplication needed for long events.

Eau de Cologne

EdC
2โ€“5%

2โ€“3 hours

The lightest concentration. Traditional citrus-based formula, refreshing and clean. Most affordable. Apply liberally and reapply frequently throughout the day.

Wear It Right

Fragrance by Occasion & Season

โ˜€๏ธ Spring / Summer

Light & Airy Scents

Warm weather amplifies fragrance projection โ€” lighter concentrations go further. Opt for fresh, citrus, and light floral EdTs that won't overwhelm in heat.

๐Ÿ‚ Autumn / Winter

Rich & Warm Scents

Cold weather absorbs projection โ€” richer, more intense fragrances come into their own. Oriental, woody, and spicy EdPs project beautifully in colder air.

๐Ÿ’ผ Office / Daytime

Subtle & Professional

Shared spaces require restraint. Choose light EdTs and fresh scents โ€” never apply more than 2 sprays. Avoid heavy musks and orientals in close quarters.

โœจ Evening / Special

Bold & Memorable

Evening events call for your signature statement scent. EdPs and parfums with oriental, woody, or rich floral bases create lasting impressions.

The Complete Fragrance Guide for 2025

Choosing a fragrance is one of the most personal decisions in beauty. Unlike skincare or makeup, which can be objectively tested for efficacy, fragrance is entirely subjective โ€” shaped by your skin chemistry, personal memories, cultural context, and mood. Our Grasse-trained perfumer breaks down everything you need to know to find your perfect scent with confidence.

Understanding Fragrance Notes

Every fragrance is composed of three layers of notes that unfold over time after application. Understanding this structure helps you assess a fragrance properly before committing to purchase.

Evaporate quickly
Heart Notes
The soul of the fragrance ยท 30 minโ€“4 hrs

What others remember

Never judge a fragrance in the first 30 minutes. Top notes โ€” often fresh citrus or aldehydes โ€” evaporate fastest and bear little resemblance to how the fragrance will smell on your skin an hour later. Always test on skin, not paper, and wait for the dry-down before deciding.

How to Make Fragrance Last Longer

Apply to Pulse Points

Pulse points generate heat, which amplifies fragrance projection. Apply to the inner wrists, inner elbows, behind the knees, base of the throat, and behind the ears. Do not rub your wrists together โ€” this crushes the top notes and accelerates evaporation.

Moisturise Before Applying

Fragrance lasts significantly longer on moisturised skin. Apply an unscented body lotion or your matching body cream before spraying. Dry skin has no surface for the fragrance to cling to and it evaporates far more quickly.

Store Correctly

UV light, heat, and humidity degrade fragrance molecules. Store bottles away from direct sunlight, in a cool dry place โ€” not in bathrooms where steam accelerates deterioration. Properly stored, most fragrances last 3โ€“5 years unopened.

Fragrance FAQs

Eau de Parfum (EdP) contains 15โ€“20% fragrance concentration and lasts 6โ€“8 hours. Eau de Toilette (EdT) contains 5โ€“15% and lasts 4โ€“6 hours. EdPs are richer, more complex, and more expensive. EdTs are lighter, more casual, and better suited for daytime and warm weather wear. Neither is categorically superior โ€” choose based on your lifestyle, the occasion, and the season.
Choose an Eau de Parfum or Parfum concentration. Apply to moisturised skin on pulse points (wrists, neck, inner elbows) โ€” never rub. Use a matching body lotion or shower gel from the same fragrance house to layer the scent. Oriental, woody, and gourmand bases (vanilla, amber, musk) naturally have better longevity than fresh and citrus families.
Always test on skin, not paper blotters. Spray on your inner wrist, leave for at least 30 minutes, and smell again โ€” this is the dry-down where the real character emerges. Test no more than 3 fragrances per visit to avoid olfactory fatigue. If ordering online, search for 5ml travel decants from reputable fragrance retailers before committing to a full bottle.
Skin chemistry โ€” pH level, hydration, diet, hormones, and natural skin microbiome โ€” interacts with fragrance molecules differently on every person. This is why a perfume that smells extraordinary on a friend may smell quite different on you. It's also why you should always test a fragrance on your own skin before purchasing, regardless of recommendations.
For EdP and Parfum: 2โ€“3 sprays on pulse points is sufficient. For EdT: 3โ€“4 sprays. More is not better โ€” overapplication is one of the most common fragrance mistakes. Your nose acclimatises to your own scent within minutes (this is called olfactory adaptation), but others will still smell it clearly. Start with less, especially in shared or enclosed spaces.
