How to Shave Properly β€” Stop Razor Burn for Good

Razor burn, ingrown hairs, and irritation are almost always caused by technique β€” not the blade. Fix the technique and the problems disappear.

Step 1: Prep is everything

Shave after a warm shower. The steam opens pores and softens hair, making it cut far more easily. Dry shaving or shaving before a shower is the single biggest cause of razor burn. If you cannot shower first, apply a warm damp towel to your face for 60 seconds.

Step 2: Apply shaving cream properly

Never dry shave. Apply shaving cream or gel generously and leave for 60-90 seconds before your first stroke β€” the cream continues to soften the hair for the first 90 seconds after application. More time equals an easier, closer shave.

Shaving foam from a can is the least effective option. A quality shaving cream applied with a brush or your fingers produces a denser, more protective lather that holds more moisture against the hair.

Step 3: The shaving technique

Shave with the grain (the direction the hair grows) on your neck and sensitive areas. Against the grain gives a closer shave but significantly increases irritation risk, especially on the neck. Map your grain direction before you start β€” it changes direction across the face.

  • Use short, light strokes β€” do not press the blade into the skin
  • Rinse the blade after every 2-3 strokes to prevent clogging
  • Stretch the skin taut with your free hand for a smoother surface
  • Never go over the same area more than twice β€” each pass increases irritation
  • Replace your blade every 5-7 shaves β€” a dull blade is the leading cause of razor burn

Step 4: Post-shave care

Rinse with cold water to close pores. Pat dry β€” never rub. Apply an aftershave balm immediately, not an alcohol-based splash. Alcohol splashes feel bracing but dry out freshly shaved skin and contribute to irritation. A fragrance-free balm with aloe vera or glycerin soothes and moisturises.

Moisturiser after balm: Follow your aftershave balm with your regular moisturiser and SPF. Freshly shaved skin is particularly vulnerable to UV damage.

Preventing ingrown hairs

Ingrown hairs are caused by hair curling back and growing into the skin. Prevent them by exfoliating 2-3 times per week to remove dead skin cells that trap hair, always shaving with the grain, and applying a balm that keeps skin soft and pores clear post-shave.

Frequently asked questions

Every 5-7 shaves. A blade feels fine until it suddenly causes irritation β€” that is the dullness threshold. Replacing proactively prevents the irritation rather than reacting to it.
Multi-blade razors give a closer shave in fewer passes. Single blade safety razors (DE razors) cause less irritation for many men, especially with coarse or curly hair, and are significantly cheaper per shave long-term. Try both and see what your skin prefers.
Hair on the neck grows in multiple directions β€” you cannot shave against the grain everywhere. Map the growth direction first and always shave with it on the neck. Reduce pressure significantly on the neck compared to the face.
